Alabama State University was founded in 1867, in Marion, Ala., as a school for African-Americans. The school started as the Lincoln Normal School with $500 raised by nine freed slaves now known as the Marion Nine, making ASU one of the nation’s oldest institutions of higher education founded for black Americans.

Today, Alabama State University, located in Montgomery, Ala., is a widely respected, world-class institution of higher learning which welcomes students of all races. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a historically black public university in Tallahassee, Florida (USA). Founded in 1887, it is located on the highest geographic hill in Tallahassee. It is the fifth largest historically black university in the United States by enrollment and the only historically black public university in Florida. It is a member institution of the State University System of Florida, as well as one of the state's land-grant universities, and is accredited to award bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

FAMU has been named the highest-ranked public historically Black college and university (HBCU) by the U.S News & World Report 2021 Best Colleges ranking of Top Public Universities. Additionally, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering earned a spot on the U.S. News & World Report badge-eligible list with a 69th ranking among the 206 Best Undergraduate engineering schools offering doctorate degrees. The college is also ranked number two among all Florida engineering programs.
